Workshop summary: This workshop will focus on the significance and relevance of LIS training and education for library practitioners. Previous concerns that were raised about an ageing “profession” and the danger of more library schools closing, not to mention a move away from the traditional concept of library schools, will be addressed. This particular workshop deals with academic libraries, but will at a later stage include all other library types.

Workshop summary:
As practitioners in the Library and Information sector we
have to engage in deliberate and continued efforts to raise
awareness of libraries and the role it plays in the community.
Advocacy can be as simple as talking about the library to your
neighbour but it can also be as multifaceted as designing an
advocacy plan for your library that includes meeting with decision
makers in your community and the development of advocacy strategies
around specific issues.
Margaret Law of the University of Alberta in Canada is an authority
on library advocacy and she will present this informative workshop.
